We have to admit it – we love to eat well! And if it is still eating from local products, produced on the spot with passion by our Opole producers, then we are ready to sacrifice really much! We are not afraid of rains and blizzards then, to get to delicious food in some distant restaurant at the end of the world. Today, we want to present you our favorite Opole specialties and generally everything that is associated with Opole cuisine. And that there is a lot of it, then treat this entry as an introduction to our story about what should be found in every Opole kitchen and on every Opole table. ps. we invite you to Silesian noodles;)
/ honeys from the apiary in Maciejów
We also do not refuse sweets! We try, however, to be healthy! And is something sweeter and healthier than honey? We focus on honey from the apiary in Maciejów, near Kluczbork. Not only is this a magical place in the middle of fields (painted with a variety of grain … covered with wheat, silver-plated with rye) causing total bliss, it is still used as a curiosity like api-inhalers. It’s something like a sauna, where there are secured hives, so we breathe air, which is a blessing for immunity and upper respiratory tract.
Apart from these curiosities, the basic activity of the apiary is the production of delicious honeys and candles from beeswax. They are available on the spot in an apiary, and in a special set also on our website. For winter evenings, it’s the perfect antidepressant, plus tea and blanket!
/ traditionaly made
Under this name there is a bakery from Krasiejów, producing traditional bread. Fragrant with a real peel, not an inflatable, roast-like product. You can buy products from Krasiejów in many places in Opolszczyzna – marked with the company logo with the Opole pattern. And here is a special applause for using the Opole motifs, not only in the company logo. The floral pattern appears on the charming sideboards, but also on delivery vans and the company’s headquarters;) pattern created by Agnieszka Okos;)
/ silesian noodles “bifej”
Silesian “bifej” pasta is a first quality Opole product, ideal for Sunday broth. ps. we’re also waiting for a gluten-free version;)
/ carp from the Opole region
We usually associate carp with one of the Christmas Eve dishes. And here a rasp appears, because some of the family members love carp and the other part is not too fond of it. Such a carp fried with onion, made by Mama Grażka is probably the best in the world. We convince her to do it more often than once a year! Moreover because our region stands with breeding ponds. Carps are bred, among other fish in Niemodlin, around the commune of Peace or on the Krogulna farm. You can also buy fresh fish straight from the producer. Rybacka Local Action Group Opole keeps a list of such places, to organize great workshops on the preparation of our local fish.
/ coffee “Opolanka”
If you belong to the youngest “X” generation, you probably do not remember that over Opole, a specific smell of roasted coffee was brewing before the rain. And all this thanks to Inka cereal coffee, which has been produced here since the 1970s (today’s Nutricia). Even before the war, there was a German coffee production plant “Oppelner Getreide und Malzkaffeefabrik”, nationalized after the war. The production of Inka in Opole did not cope with the free market. Today it is still being produced, but unfortunately not with us 🙁 Nevertheless, because ofthe clever youngsters from Opole – under the name Hard Beans Coffee Roasters – continue the coffee traditions of Opole in their offer, in addition to coffee from the best grains, they created (definitely a nobler than Inka) coffee called Opolanka (Peruvian Cajamarca species). Ideal for a gift from the Opole region, it will soon be available in a set with our mug in the Opole pattern 😉
/ Karolka on the culinary trail
Good food means also good restaurants, and there are plenty of them in the Opole region. We especially like those places where you can eat Opole traditional dishes with good quality local products. That is why we send our Karolka every now and then, so that she can eat in interesting places in our region. We will be giving you these reports, and who knows, maybe someday we will create a map of such places 😉
Raspberry honey in Głuchołazy
Restaurant at the Spałka Hotel in Kluczbork
/Opole jar
We love practical gifts and souvenirs from travel, and preferably those that you can still eat or drink. That’s why our version of the memorabilia from the Opole region was created. In a glass jar, of course, you will find traditionally painted porcelain in the Opole floral pattern, gingerbread also in the pattern, for sweet honey from the appiary in Maciejów and cherry tea from the Tea World store in Opole and a brewing machine. A gift in the style of eco and zero waste – instead of a plastic film – a large glass jar is used for uncommon packaging;)
/ Olesno cream liqueur
I do not think there is anyone in the Opole region who would not have heard about the famous Olesno creamy liqueur. In our photo, slightly in the background, gives way to a butter dish with the original Oleski butter from the District Dairy, for it was there that “creamy” was born, a liqueur on cream (17% alcohol). Once, you could only try it at local festivals. Recently, you can also buy and offer it as a gift. But be careful – remember to store in the fridge!
you can buy a creamy liqueur, among other local products, in the Lviv Cafe in Opole
/ “changes” bar
Those who know us know also how much we love the bars of the Opole company “Changes, Changes”. Several times a year we go on a diet and in search of something sweet (and healthy!) We reach for these natural and tasty bars based on dried fruit, nuts and seeds. They are also perfect for mountain trips, they give a kick and they are great for a really long march! Part of the income from their sale is allocated for the purposes of the “Open Cages Foundation”. We eat without remorse!
/ “rodzynek” shop
With local products the problem is often they are hard to get. Unfortunately, you have to ride around and search for local producers, tough luck! But there is one place in the capital of the region, which we love the most – this is the “Rodzynek” shop in Opole’s market “Cytrusek”. Here, we always find local products of the highest quality. When we buy sauerkraut here, we know that it is really pickled, Polish garlic and dried pineapples are best under the sun. Of course, we come with our own bags and jars, and the service behind the counter always greets us with a smile.
/ Bistromama – our local product!
Justyna Osiecka-Sułek, known in the internet as Bistromama, is already our local ‘product’. Justyna has been running a culinary blog for many years, where she shares recipes, including regional ones, and in this beautiful way promotes our Opole cuisine. In the picture Justyna in our apron in the Opole pattern, and the photo session was made in the kitchen of the Tenement House Museum of Silesian Opole.
/ gingerbread in the Opole pattern
Although gingerbread is associated mainly with Toruń, those decorated in the Opole pattern are slowly becoming our local product. Although we treat them as a sweet souvenir from the Opole region, they are so beautiful that it’s a pity to eat them!
/ porcelain
Porcelain in the Opole pattern is the main ingredient of a successful Sunday dinner! Sets of traditionally painted porcelain often adorned walls in the homes of our grandmothers and parents. It was often a wedding present and stood for years in a cupboard, because it’s a pity to use them. We assume that if something is usable, it is to serve us, and if it is beautiful, the better! And for those who do not like traditional porcelain, Agnieszka looks for porcelain in color and paints in a traditional pattern in white, like on “kroszonka”!
/ kreple – doughnuts
Although donuts are known around the world, only Silesians call them “kreple”. In addition with the approaching Fat Thursday, we will share with you our Opole spots, where you’ll get the best! Place no. 1 has been invariably occupied by Cukiernia Malik on ul. Grunwaldzka in Opole and doughuts with chocolate! The next places on the podium are ex aequo: doughnuts from “Pączki w górę” at Delikatesy and “Wytwórnia pączków” on the Opole city centre.
/ European network of regional culinary heritage
Opole region belongs to this association, whose characteristic logo you have certainly already seen! This sign is a guarantee that you buy healthy and local food. This sign also includes restaurants that you can trust in terms of local and good products.
We got already hungry, what do you plan to eat today?
