In a small village near Opole, just before the outbreak of the Second World War, a family bakery was established. In this family, however, there was no successor, i.e. a man, to continue traditions and to do business. There were two sisters on the issue – beautiful ladies. The older one already had a fiancé and the younger one was in love with a young boy who was a watchmaker’s profession. The feeling of the young flourished every day, they met and probably quietly planned their future together. He was a watchmaker by education, he was nothing but a baker, what the girl’s family expected from him.
The post-war years were difficult for everyone. It was a time to return home, rebuild what was left. It’s time to start living again in the post-war period. It was necessary to take care of the family at this uncertain moment of history, and also to ensure that the family business survives and to feed the loved ones. Meetings of young people were not welcome for the mother of a girl who already had her vision of the future of her daughter and the whole family. She had a flair for business, so she decided that the daughter must marry the baker so that the family business would survive and the bakery could still function. Such were the times. The young, despite their sincere love, could not resist family plans.
Most marriages from the post-war period were associated by matchmaking. That was the case with the young bride. Matchmaker was tasked with finding out where he could find a potential husband who would be able to take over bakeries and marry the owner’s daughter. After a short search (in the end the time was urgent), the matchmaker together with the mother of the girl initiated the first meeting of the young. Did they like each other? Today, it may seem to us a story like romance. It turned out that the baker loved his “outfit” with all his heart and gave her everything. Throughout his life he was a model of a perfect and devoted husband, whom all neighbors envied the girl.
Did she love him? Probably it would be hard for them to persevere for years together if their feelings did not connect … They certainly led a happy life, she gave birth to two sons. One runs a bakery to this day. I wonder if this “matchmade” woman, later my mother, and finally grandmother of the grandchildren – always remembered her old feeling for the watchmaker? Let it be a secret …
